Charlotte, NC

On behalf of the Freedom Center for Social Justice’s staff and Board of Directors, we certainly hope you are enjoying ICONIC 2023. Though your support is much appreciated this evening, there is a way for you to continue making an impact even after you walk out of these doors. Today, you can join the Freedom Sustainers, the Freedom Center for Social Justice’s recurring donor program. By becoming a Freedom Sustainer, and making a monthly donation in support of our culture-shifting work, you will ensure these programs and services you have heard about this evening can go on uninterrupted.

Becoming a Freedom Sustainer is easy! Simply choose the amount you would like to give monthly, and click the box that says, “Make this recurring contribution monthly.” It’s that simple, and your gift will go a long way toward strengthening the social impact you heard about here tonight at ICONIC!

A letter from our Director of Development

Gregory Raynor

Dear ICONIC 2023 Attendees,

I hope this letter finds you well and filled with the same sense of inspiration and purpose that we experienced during this remarkable evening. I am humbled by the privilege of addressing you as the Director of Development for The Freedom Center for Social Justice (FCSJ), an organization that embodies the spirit of change, empowerment, and hope.

Your presence at ICONIC 2023 has made an indelible mark on our mission and the communities we serve. It is your unwavering support, commitment, and dedication to our cause that have propelled us forward in our pursuit of a world where equal protections and opportunities exist for all.

Tonight, we celebrated the power of unity, as we gathered at the intersection of diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. FCSJ works tirelessly at these intersections of race, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, faith, class, and social justice. Your presence here signifies your belief in our vision, and your support fuels our passion for creating lasting change.

Our advocacy efforts, whether centered around LGBTQ issues, combating voter disenfranchisement, or striving for equal protections under the law, are only possible because of individuals like you. Your generosity and commitment have a tangible impact on the lives of marginalized populations, opening doors, raising awareness, and creating life-giving change.

As we reflect on the impact we have made together, I want to invite you to continue this journey with us. Your continued support is invaluable, and we cannot achieve our vision without you by our side. Whether through financial contributions, volunteering your time, or sharing your expertise, your involvement remains a beacon of hope for those we serve.

Looking ahead, we eagerly anticipate ICONIC 2024, where we will come together once again to celebrate our achievements, renew our commitment, and set our sights on even greater horizons. I encourage you to mark your calendars and join us for what promises to be another transformative event.

In closing, I want to express my deepest gratitude for your attendance at ICONIC 2023 and for being an integral part of our journey towards justice, equality, and protections for all. Visionary Voices

Maij Mai

Maij Vu Mai (pronounced like MAGE, pronouns they/he/sib/homie/fam) is a powerful Black Asian Trans Queer Neuroexpansive MaGe devoted to creating radical healing spaces where marginalized folks can tap into their own alchemical power and knowledge ecosystems. The energetically, flamboyant child of migrants, much of Maij’s upbringing was profoundly shaped by their experiences growing up in Charlotte, NC in a Roman Catholic-Buddhist, Black & Vietnamese household that did its very best to make meaning of the world in the U.S. South. Making duck music out of blades of grass, playing hand puppets with their siblings, & speaking to the ocean spirits of Myrtle Beach make up some of Maij’s fondest, childhood memories.

Their formal education includes a Bachelors of Arts in Sociology and Women’s, Gender, Sexuality Studies and a Masters of Divinity from Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, NC. They are a proud alum of the Freedom Center's 2021 Trans Seminarian Cohort and currently serve as a higher education trickster and professional at PSR's Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion and Duke University's Center for Multicultural Affairs. With a combined 10+ years of experience co-creating magic in spiritual/religious/faith-based spaces, higher education institutions, and grassroots community organizing- Maij transforms every space they touch and creatively disarms systems of oppression with their non-binary wonder.  As a being who exists and plays at the intersections of the Bipolar spectrum, ADHD, and OCD- Maij identifies themselves as an emotional alchemist and moodbender, and joyfully explores their body wisdom so that they can share that wisdom with others. They understand their existence as an ever shifting cauldron of power, agency, and meaning-making in a world that seeks to eliminate them.

Now a days, you can usually find Maij pacing, organizing, experimenting, contemplating, tasting, alchemizing, researching, writing, creating, communing, & BREATHING to the pace of their own spirit. They are juggling (in the most playful of ways) a million & one creative projects, hobbies, and fantasies all at once, hopping through different time loops & portals to make the impossible possible. They frequently talk to their ancestors, dream of their descendents, & engage in creative play with their present community. They are protecting their PEACE. at all costs- by any means necessary.

In order to really understand Maij, you’ll probably just have to meet them.
