Welcome to ICONIC 2025!

ICONIC is our annual celebration of community, resilience, and the people who carry the work of justice forward. Each year we gather to honor leaders, storytellers, advocates, artists, and everyday visionaries whose commitment lights the way toward liberation.

This year’s theme, Lights in the Darkness, recognizes the brilliance found in our communities, especially during times of challenge. When systems fail us and the world feels heavy, our people continue to shine through their love, courage, creativity, and collective power. ICONIC 2025 is a celebration of that light and a reminder that we move forward together.

What to Expect

This year’s ICONIC will be more relaxed and more community centered than past gala formats. Instead of a formal dinner, guests will enjoy light refreshments, meaningful connection, and an inspiring program honoring folks across social justice, faith, LGBTQ advocacy, and immigrant rights.

The evening will include:

  • Recognition of powerful community leaders

  • Reflections on justice, belonging, and collective care

  • Space for connection, joy, and shared purpose

  • Opportunities to support the work and sustain our mission

ICONIC is more than a fundraiser. It is a gathering of community, a night to witness one another, and a celebration of the work we make possible when we stand together.

ICONIC 2025 HONOREES

ICONIC
Non-Profit

  • Carolina Migrant Network is a trail-blazing immigrant rights organization based in Charlotte, North Carolina. Born of a vision to end the fear of family separation and to ensure every individual facing immigration removal proceedings has access to representation, CMN now serves both as a legal defender and a community organizer. CMN stands alone in the Carolinas as the only nonprofit blending free legal representation for detained immigrants with grassroots education, civic engagement, and youth leadership development.

Through its work, CMN empowers immigrant families to participate fully in civic life, challenges harmful enforcement policies, and builds cultural power from the ground up. Their programs—such as direct representation in removal cases, “Know Your Rights” workshops, and the Monarca Fellowship for young immigrant organizers—illustrate their deep commitment to justice, dignity, and community leadership.

ICONIC Community Group

  • Out of the ashes of disappointment and disillusionment, Collective Liberation Church was born with a bold vision: to create a faith community where liberation is not a metaphor, but the mission.

Launched in June 2025, Collective Liberation is a radically inclusive congregation rooted in the belief that the Gospel is synonymous with justice, equity, and freedom. In just a few short months, this growing community has embodied love through dynamic worship, mutual aid with the unhoused, solidarity with immigrants, liberative education, and unapologetic affirmation of every person as sacred.

Collective Liberation Church is intentionally inclusive, integrated, international, and intersectional—a place where faith meets action, and where people of every race, culture, gender, and orientation belong fully. Guided by the radical love of Jesus and grounded in liberation theology, they are building not just a church, but a movement of courage, compassion, and collective hope.

ICONIC Individual

  • Kate Cruz grew up in Stokes County, NC, and has resided in Charlotte since 2019. She first started her activist journey in 2019 by volunteering with the Coalition for Responsible Home Education (CRHE), where she helped create the first database on how to report educational neglect in the country, driven, in part, by the lack of education she received growing up in the Christian Nationalist/Far-Right movement. More recently, she served as the Field Director for Juan Diego (JD) Mazuera Arias’ District 5 City Council race and currently serves on the executive council for the UNC Charlotte American Association of University Professors (AAUP). She also volunteers with the Carolina Migrant Network and is currently a Bridge Fellow with Democracy NC. In her free time, she enjoys gardening, reading, writing poetry, and spending time with her two cats: Apollo and Blu.

ICONIC Trans* Advocate

  • Tiana is a dedicated advocate, faith leader, and community organizer whose work is rooted in compassion, justice, and her life motto found in Matthew 25:35–40. A 2010 graduate of Harding University High School, she has spent nearly a decade building a legacy of service that uplifts marginalized communities across Charlotte and beyond.

Her advocacy journey began in 2016, when she first started feeding and ministering to the houseless community. What started as a simple act of service grew into a mission that has since reached more than 2,000 people in need.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Tiana played a pivotal role in the Days Inn crisis response, supporting 25 displaced families with food, toys, financial assistance, and ultimately pathways to stable housing. In this period, she collaborated with community-centered organizations such as Transitioning Resource Center of the Carolinas, Jail Support, and Feed the Movement—strengthening her commitment to frontline advocacy.

In recognition of her leadership, Tiana was invited in 2020 to join the Advisory Board of State of Emergency, a Charlotte-based nonprofit dedicated to supporting Black and Brown trans women—a role she continues to hold with pride and purpose.

Her impact expands beyond community organizing. In 2021, Tiana was licensed as an Evangelist in the Lord’s Church, deepening her ministry and blending spiritual care with social justice. She furthered her service credentials by becoming a certified Mental Health First Aid responder in 2023, equipping her to better support individuals navigating crisis and trauma.

In 2024, her advocacy reached a national stage when she marched in Washington, D.C. with the Poor People’s Campaign. Her dedication led to an invitation to join the NCPPC organizing committee, amplifying her voice in the ongoing fight for economic and racial justice.

A trailblazer in her own right, Tiana continues to step boldly into rooms where many trans women have been excluded or discouraged by fear and intimidation. Her courage, faith, and unwavering commitment to service set her apart as a transformative leader.

Tiana is currently pursuing certification as a Peer Support Specialist, further strengthening her ability to empower, encourage, and walk alongside others on their healing journeys.

Rooted in service, guided by faith, and driven by justice, Tiana remains committed to showing up for “the least of these”—not just in word, but in lifelong action.

FCSJ Founder’s Award

The Freedom Center for Social Justice’s Founder’s Award is a distinguished recognition presented to an individual or partner who has advanced the mission, vision, and values of FCSJ in powerful and tangible ways. This award honors those who demonstrate unwavering commitment to social justice, equality, and liberation, while uplifting marginalized communities and expanding the reach of collective change.
